Find broken links

Check one page or crawl your site, locate broken destinations, and verify your fixes.

Find links that send visitors to a dead end. Broken Links shows both the page containing a link and the destination it checked, so you know where to make the fix.

Create a report

  1. Select your project and open Broken Links.
  2. Click New Report.
  3. Enter the Website URL, for example https://booking.com/.
  4. Choose a Scope: Page checks links on the submitted page; Site follows internal links to other pages.
  5. For a site crawl, set Max Depth. Depth 0 checks the starting URL; depth 1 includes pages linked from it.
  6. Set Max Pages to limit the crawl. The form accepts 1 to 500 pages.
  7. Turn on Check External Links if you also want to check destinations on other domains.
  8. Click Start Crawl. Open the completed report from the report list.

9 of 9 sample links

Sample data. Try the controls; changes stay in this example.

Change All links to Broken only to focus the table. For each result:

  • Source Page is where the link was found. Open this page in your website editor.
  • Checked URL is the destination that was tested.
  • Status shows the response from that destination.
  • Link Text helps you identify the link on the page. Some resources have no link text.
  • Type identifies the resource or link type.

Update or remove the incorrect link on your website, then use Re-crawl to check the result. You can sort the table and use Columns to keep the details you need visible.

The interactive example contains nine links: six working and three broken. Try the filters to find the pages that need attention. In your own report, the counts describe that crawl and its chosen scope; they do not guarantee that every page or future link is error-free.

Next, use OnSite Analysis to investigate page speed and other technical issues.
